We’re pleased to announce Jette Hansen Edwards as a keynote speaker for Phonetics 2026 Hong Kong.
Professor Hansen Edwards is a leading scholar in applied linguistics and second language phonology, with internationally recognised research at the intersection of phonetics, sociolinguistics, and World Englishes. Her work has been instrumental in shaping contemporary discussions around speech intelligibility, accent, and variation in multilingual contexts.

She is Professor of Applied English Linguistics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Originally from Denmark and educated in the United States, she has been based in Hong Kong since 2003. Her research focuses on how second language sound systems are acquired and used, and how social, linguistic, and attitudinal factors shape both production and perception of speech.
Professor Hansen Edwards has published seven books to date, including four major volumes in phonetics and phonology. Her recent book, The Sounds of English around the World: An Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology (Cambridge University Press, 2023), is the first to place World Englishes and sociolinguistic variation at the centre of English phonetics and phonology. Her work appears widely in leading journals and reference volumes across applied linguistics, phonology, and World Englishes.
