Who We Are
The International Linguistic Society (Linguistic Society) is a non-profit organisation established to advance the study of language and promote linguistic research and applications globally. Our members include researchers and professors who share a vision for fostering linguistic knowledge and applications through conferences and related activities.
Our journey began in 1997 when Antonis Botinis organised the Research and Tutorial Workshop on Intonation in Athens, Greece, under the European Speech Communication Association (ESCA, now ISCA). This initiative laid the groundwork for what would become the ISCA Workshop on Experimental Linguistics in 2006, evolving into the ExLing Society in 2019.
In 2024, during the ExLing 2024 Paris conference, we founded the International Linguistic Society to meet emerging challenges in the field. By integrating diverse approaches and research traditions, we aim to host all linguistic subjects and interrelated disciplines within a unified framework. Our focus is on standardising methodologies to enhance the impact of linguistic research on scientific progress and quality of life.
We envision a welcoming space where researchers, from seasoned experts to students taking their first steps in linguistics, can share ideas, exchange knowledge, and foster collaborations in an inclusive, international setting.
What We Do
The International Linguistic Society is committed to advancing linguistic research and applications through the following activities:
- Organising Conferences:
- Regular Conferences: Our bi-annual events explore all areas of linguistic research and applications.
- Occasional Thematic Conferences: These focus on specific linguistic disciplines, creating opportunities for in-depth exploration.
- Publishing Proceedings: We facilitate the dissemination of high-quality research through the publication of conference findings.
- Promoting Educational Initiatives: We sponsor lecture series, seminars, and linguistic publications to support academic and professional growth.
Our vision is to provide a meeting point where researchers, regardless of background or stage in their career, can share their ideas, present preliminary findings, and engage with peers in a collaborative and enriching environment.
The Mission
The International Linguistic Society is dedicated to:
- Supporting the study of language and fostering advancements in linguistic research and applications.
- Bridging the gap between established and emerging scholars, offering platforms for meaningful collaboration.
- Providing opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue to address the challenges of modern linguistics.
We are particularly committed to creating a space for students and early-career researchers to share their work, develop their skills, and contribute to the field. By hosting a diverse array of linguistic topics, we aim to enhance the scope and quality of research and make a tangible impact on society.
