Keynote Announcement: Lieke Van Maastricht – Language Education 2026 Online

We are pleased to announce that Lieke Van Maastricht (Radboud University) will deliver a keynote lecture at Language Education 2026 Online.

Dr Van Maastricht’s research focuses on second language acquisition, with a particular emphasis on prosody, including stress, rhythm, and intonation. Her work takes an experimental approach to understanding how learners acquire prosodic features in a second language and the factors that influence this process.

Her research explores the challenges of L2 prosody acquisition, highlighting the gap between theoretical research and classroom practice. While language instruction often focuses on individual sounds, prosodic features remain underrepresented despite their importance in communication, including word recognition, turn-taking, and discourse meaning. Her work also considers the role of individual learner differences and the potential of gesture, such as hand and head movements, in supporting prosody learning.

Her current research includes the development of an open-access tool designed to automatically evaluate the prosody of learner speech, providing targeted feedback to support improvement and enhance language learning outcomes.
